Nimbus @ Joo Chiat

Today we, the younger sis and I, made our way to King's Cart for lunch only to beat a retreat as they were closed for renovations. A note on Google Maps would have been helpful, just saying.

So we ended up in Nimbus @ Joo Chiat without reservations on a weekend during lunch. A big gamble for a cafe in the Katong/Joo Chiat area. Fortunately, they were able to accommodate us and we did not have to wait to be seated.

Fresh from our barista class, we course had to go to a cafe and order their coffee. The sis ordered a Cafe Latte ($6) and I got the Vanilla Latte ($6.5). We couldn't really taste any difference from coffee from other cafes. I guess our palates are not refined enough. As for my vanilla latte, I couldn't taste or smell any hint of vanilla. The latte art, however, was great. We couldn't quite figure out the one for my vanilla latte. The sis says it is one of the Teletubbies.

We got the Truffle Beef Bowl (pan-seared beef slices and sous vide egg sitting on a bed of truffle-seasoned Japanese rice, served with Japanese pickles and furikake, $22), Chicken Wings (crispy classic mid-wing joints and drumlets with honey butter drizzle, $12), Tater tots (extra crispy tater tots with grated parmesan, $7), Classic Churros (dusted with cinnamon sugar and paired with decadent Valrhona chocolate sauce, $15).

They were really slow in serving the churros. After clearing my plate, they left my sis's plate on the table, perhaps forgetting to clear it? We were expecting our churros to come soon after, but nothing. So, we reminded them of our order. After a long time (it felt really long to us), we had to check with them again about our order. They assured us that it was coming soon, which did not happen. We were almost ready to call it quits and get them to cancel the order or make a to-go bag when they finally served the churros.

Unfortunately, I can not say that the wait was worth it. It was not. The churros were not good. They were overcooked, burnt, and tasted bitter. It was a disappointing ending to an otherwise pleasant meal.

Overall, I give this 3 Aunty Karens. The food was tasty and compares well with the other cafes in the area. The coffee was good and latte art instagrammable. The service was spotty and the burnt churros were unforgivable.

3 out of 5 stars on the Aunty Karen scale
