Typhoon Taiwanese Cafe @ i12 Katong Mall

Today, we, the younger sis and I, had to attend a virtual class on barista foundation. We have signed up for a class with our SkillsFuture credit. The in-class session will happen next month. Today is all the theory about the process from bean to cup, and some info on the espresso machines we will be using next month. After class, we went over to Typhoon Taiwanese Cafe @ i12 Katong Mall for lunch.

We got the Souffle Stackers with Honeycomb Ice Cream ($17.90), Taiwan Lu Rou Rice ($13.50), and Golden Chicken Fritters ($8.50). For drinks, the sis got the Cold Oolong Milk Tea with grass jelly ($6.90) while I got the Cold Sweet Potato Fresh Milk with grass jelly ($8.90).

When we ordered the dishes on our mobile phone, I got the sis to put in that we wanted the souffle stackers to be served together with the rest of the dishes. To our surprise, it was the first thing they served, even before our drinks. So I guess we are having dessert as our appetizer.

I was initially worried that we would not be able to finish it as I was expecting dense doughy pancakes, but these souffle stackers were light, airy, and fluffy. They went well with the honeycomb ice cream, biscuit crumbs, and fruit. We finished it before our other dishes arrived. Just looking at it now makes me want to go back for it.

The Lu Rou Rice and Golden Chicken Fritters (yansu ji or popcorn chicken) were typical fare you find at a local Taiwanese eatery. It wasn't bad, nor was it great. The chicken was crispy and flavorful, but nothing extraordinary. Kind of forgettable.

I was pleasantly surprised by the drinks. I wasn't sure how the sweet potato flavour would work in a drink, but it was surprisingly delicious. And the grass jelly added a nice chewy texture.

Overall I give this 3.5 Aunty Karens. I love the souffle and the drinks. The mains, not so much. The service could have been better. They could have checked if we wanted to serve everything together. I would come back for the souffle and the drinks.

3.5 out of 5 stars on the Aunty Karen scale
