Hello Arigato Joo Chiat

1st May is Labour Day here. When I went overseas to work, I realised that different countries have different dates for Labour Day, although ours is pretty close to the UK one.

Anyway, the sis and I went to one of those fancy cafes with instagrammable "sando"s or Japanese-style sandwiches around the neighbourhood. There are quite a few here in gentrified Joo Chiat/Katong and we decided on Hello Arigato today.

It was already full when we got there slightly after noon. A friendly wait staff informed us that the wait time was around half an hour and that we could provide our contact information to be notified when our table was ready. It sounded like a reasonable amount of time to wait and as it turned out, it was barely 15 minutes of walking around the five-foot way before we got the buzz that our table was ready.

We ordered the Gyu Sando ($26), Har Cheong Gai Sando ($16, only available at this outlet), and Hello Kombu Tots with nori mayo ($12). For drinks, we had the Iced Dirty Matcha (with Coffee) ($8 each).

Some people may say that paying more than $20 for a sandwich is too extravagant, and I would agree. We did think it was a Wagyu beef sando we were ordering and thought it was reasonably priced. Alas, the Wagyu version is from the cafe across the street while this is an Angus beef striploin.

So how was it? I give it 4 Aunty Karens. The missing Aunty Karen is for the dirty matcha - too much ice in a rather small class to warrant $8. The sandwiches were cooked well and tasty. The milk bread was nicely toasted and provided some structure to the sandwiches so that they didn't fall apart. The caramelised sweet onion jam for the wagyu and crunchy cucumber for the HCG were good filling additions as they balanced out the proteins of the sando. The cafe is small and does fill up fast so if visiting during the weekend, come early or be prepared to wait.

4 out of 5 stars on the Aunty Karen scale
