La Fez Restaurant @ East Coast

Found out about a new Moroccan restaurant in the 'hood from a YouTube video on interesting architecture. This channel reviews apartments/houses all over the island and has started reviewing workspaces and cafes in the 'hood.

Back to the restaurant, it seems to have an interesting exterior and interior (photos above), their menu seems okay, and it's not too far away, so we (the younger sis and I) decided to go for one of our weekend eating outings. The restaurant? La Fez Restaurant.

We ordered the Dip Platter ($20) and the Shakshuka Tagine with Eggs & Feta Cheese ($22) and ended the meal with a Hot Baklava Cheesecake ($12). For drinks, the sis got the Nous Nous Coffee ($5) and I got the La Fez Moroccan Mint Tea ($14)

The Dip Platter came with a quartet of Hummus, Smoky Zalouk, Baba Ganoush & Muhammara and a generous serving of Pita Flatbread. We had a fun time trying to figure out which is which. The Baba Ganoush and Hummus were easiest to identify, the other two took a while for us to figure out. All four dips were yummy and the warm pita bread went well with them.

The Shakshuka Tagine was kind of disappointing. We were expecting it to be served in a tagine with the cover, but it came without the cover, and the dish looked shallow so the serving was quite small for the price. The eggs were overdone and dried out and we didn't really taste the feta. It also came with warm pita bread.

The Hot Baklava Cheesecake looked really nice, with the rose petals, but the taste was so-so. As a fusion of baklava and cheesecake, the menu touts this as combining the best of two desserts, but I don't think they managed that. The filo pastry is rubbery and dry and the cheesecake is ordinary, also on the dry side.

For me, the thing which I really enjoyed about the meal was the tea. It was so good that I went home and ordered some Moroccan Mint Tea bags from iherb. The sis's coffee was very strong and bitter. I was glad I didn't order that.

Overall, I give the meal 3.5 Aunty Karens. The decor, crockery, etc., feels authentic. The service wasn't too bad. The meal was a little over-priced.

3.5 out of 5 stars on the Aunty Karen scale
