Charcoal-grill & Salad Bar Keisuke

Tomorrow is the nephew's birthday. To celebrate, we, the younger sis, the older sis with her 2 children, including the birthday boy, decided to go try out Charcoal-grill & Salad Bar Keisuke, a Japanese sumiyaki (charcoal-grilled) place with a free-flow salad bar that includes mentaiko pasta. I got the Charcoal Grilled Mackerel Set ($14.90) which includes miso soup, onsen egg as well as a serving of traditional Japanese rice cooked in a small iron pot.

The mackerel was grilled to perfection. It came deboned, so it was easy to eat especially for someone who is worried about swallowing fish bones. The salad bar was well stocked with typical salad vegetables, and Japanese pickles and side dishes. They also have the usual Japanese dressing like sesame dressing. The mentaiko pasta was too cold for me. It felt like the mentaiko had congealed a bit. The coffee jelly with milk was a hit among all the coffee-heads.

The most interesting part of the set is the rice - each set came with a small iron pot of rice. It helped to keep the rice warm as you are eating. The rice was one of the best rice I've eaten, koshihikari, I suppose. The video below is of the salad bar and the iron pot of rice.

Overall, I give this 4.5 Aunty Karens. Everything is spot on. It's a plus that the salad bar was not a gimmick to lure bargain hunters, but stocked with great ingredients. I would return for another meal. And I can't wait to try other restaurants within the Keisuke umbrella.

4.5 out of 5 stars on the Aunty Karen scale
