Wheeler's Estate & Seletar Airport

Today, we (the younger sis and I) decided to head north-east to the Hampstead Wetlands Park. It is near to the smaller Seletar Airport which I wanted to check out. The route we took for our walk passed by the Japanese Cemetery Park. It is a small quiet park in a private housing estate. There were many tombs in the Japanese style and some statues that are common in Japanese cemeteries (no photos as I want to be respectful). There is an archway down the middle of the park with bougainvillaea vines which would look really pretty when in bloom. I was jokingly suggesting that it would make a great wedding photo shoot location, except I think most people would be "pantang" (like taboo?) about being in a cemetery.

For the walk to Hampstead Wetlands Park, we passed residential estates as well as secluded streets with unfamiliar street names, like the Old Birdcage Walk. After about 12 kilometres, we finally reached the wetlands park. It was a small park but we managed to catch sight of a kingfisher and other birds. There were many photographers with their huge lenses so I guess it is a good place for bird watching.

For lunch, we headed to the nearby Wheeler's Estate. They have a cute Airstream trailer. I wish they allowed us to go in to have a look.

We ordered the Smashed Avo ($22) and Shakshuka ($25). For drinks, we each got a cold latte ($7 each). I had wanted to try their nitro brews but was told their machine was under maintenance.

The coffee was good. Typical coffee like at most of the cafes we have visited. I like that it was a good-sized glass and not a small little serving. However, that is the only thing that is reasonably sized. The shakshuka was a disappointment. It came in a shallow dish and the tomato sauce is really a tomato sauce, like straight out-of-a-bottle ketchup kind, instead of the cooked tomato, onion, and bell pepper sauce that I am used to. The eggs were poached and then added instead of being cooked in the tomato sauce. The only saving grace is the sourdough toast bread that it came with.

The Smashed avocado on toast was okay. Very expensive for just a single piece of toast with some avocado and a poached egg. I know avocado toasts are expensive, but this is really expensive.

I give this meal 3 Aunty Karens. The atmosphere was nice. Although outdoors, it wasn't warm nor were there bugs problems. However, it was a tad expensive and the service was really sluggish and we had difficulty getting the attention of the servers. I will not be returning. There are other places in this area to explore.

3 out of 5 stars on the Aunty Karen scale
