Ayam Penyet President

We kind of ran out of new places to go for lunch in the neighbourhood that is not one of the trendy cafes. So, we ended up at Ayam Penyet President @ i12 Katong today.

After the experience at Nimbus, we thought we had better not overdo it and keep to 1 main and 2 sides. The side could be a dessert. Otherwise, we would be too full. We have come to that age where we can't really eat like teenagers anymore.

We ordered the Ayam Penyet (smashed fried chicken served with tofu, tempeh, crispy bits, and signature chilli paste, $7.90), Tahu Telor (Indonesian style bean curd omelette garnished with bean sprout, sliced carrot and sliced cucumber served with rich peanut sauce, $7.50), and Gado-Gado (steamed vegetables, egg, rice cake served with prepared peanut sauce dressing and onion crackers, $6.90).

The food was not bad. The chicken was crispy and the chilli was spicy and potent. I love the tahu telor. I like eggs and bean curd and the dish has both. With lots of peanut sauce and veggies thrown in. The gado-gado was overpowered by the peanut sauce so it was only so-so. But I do like the belinjau crackers.

Overall I give this 3 Aunty Karens. It was good fried chicken and the other dishes were not bad. The service was also efficient. You can probably get the same for cheaper at the hawker centre or food court.

3 out of 5 stars on the Aunty Karen scale
