Café Natsu @ Joo Chiat

Today we (younger sis and I) finally went to Café Natsu. The last time we tried to go for lunch there, there was a queue and an estimated waiting time of 45 min. Today, we managed to get there just as they were starting to serve lunch and before the lunch-time crowd people came, so we were seated in less than 10 minutes.

The exterior and interior were quite well-thought-out. The colours of the walls of the cafe remind me of the wadis of the middle-east. I like that they included round shapes and curves as it creates a more inviting atmosphere. The ceiling near the counter had some interesting woody frames.

We ordered the BBQ Shirobuta Don (Soy Caramel, Shishito Peppers, Negi, Assorted Tsukemono; $24) and the Wagyu Sando (Shishito Ketchup, Slaw, Yuzu Kosho; $26). For dessert, we ordered the Mochi Fried Doughnuts served with Salted Hokkaido Milk Ice-Cream ($12). For coffee, I got the hot Latte ($6) and the sis got the iced version (add $1 extra).

The shirobuta don was cooked well. The pork combined well with the shishito peppers and the pickles and daikon. The koshihikari rice was fluffy and soaked up the soy caramel sauce beautifully. The wagyu sando was tasty and the wagyu was cooked just right. The shokupan was thick and fluffy and toasted well.

The mochi fried doughnuts were fried to perfection. It was crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. And they paired really well with the ice-cream.

Was it worth the wait? Yes. I now understand the hype. The interior was beautiful and created an atmosphere that was relaxed, even though there was a crowd/chaos/queue outside. We didn't feel rushed. The service was attentive, but not overly so. The food was tasty, the coffee was good.

Overall, I give this 4 Aunty Karens. I would return. Maybe when the craze has died down so we don't have to fight with the crowd.

4 out of 5 stars on the Aunty Karen scale
